"Smoking Ban"

Posted by angela on 22-03-00 at 10:06 PM
I noticed that most people want to ban smoking in public places and I don't understand why. If people don't like smoking they can stay home. I think bars need to allow smoking, it is a part of social interaction.

You have to realize, Anglea, that smoking actually makes people sick. I'm not talking about cancer or anything quite as terminal, but a lot of people suffer from things like asthma and allergies, not only to smoke, but to perfumes, hairsprays, etc. Shouldn't they have the right to social interaction too?

The bans (that are happening throughout North America) are helping people to quit. Smoking is a killer and if society creates this midset then we are all better off.

Just some thoughts....

I believe that smoking is very bad for everyone. There are a lot of people addicted to smoking and of course, the government gets rich off the taxes on one hand and gets poor on the other hand trying to provide adequate hospital and medical personnel to cope with the problems they help create. I believe they should jump taxes considerably on cigarettes and people would then try and get help for their addiction.

>I had been a moderate smoker for more than 35 years and couldn't understand why the animosity towards smokers. I tried several times to quit. Once I actually succeeded for almost 5 years. Finally I joined the Seventh Day Adventist (I'm a Jew) non-smokers clinic. They do not talk about God at all. That was in 1983. I have never smoked again. I cannot bear to be in a room with smokers. The sight and smell makes me actually ill. You want to smoke? Good. But not in my presence, please.

Personally, if people want to smoke in a public place, do it in an enclosed well vented room. But to allow smoking at the next table, the logic chokes me.

And one thing that really irks me, is when I go to a restaurant, and the best tables, near the windows, are reserved for ...smokers.

Well I agree with the banning. I myself have allergies as do many people. I hate it that wherever I go the air I breathe in is polluted. I don't care who smokes, but smokers have to realize that they are killing others through their choice. I am like so many others nflders who enjoy spending time in the bars. I love the atmosphere. But I can only stay a little while before the smoke becomes unbearable. So many places have recognized a need to ban certain pollutants. I think it's great that we could have smoke banned from most of our places.Particularly our local bars.

Does anybody know if a ban is being considered? It is becoming common in many other parts of Canada and USA.

Smoker believe that they have rights, We all have rights, it's like we'have the right to use the bathroom, but I don,t do it in your face.

Angela, you musn't realize that the ban will not affect people in bars "socializing". The ban is for public places other the bars. The food court for instance, has the ban in affect, so nobody can light up there.I have a question for you, do you smoke??
Because if you do I think you should quit, because if you don't you won't be socializing for much longer.

I believe people have the right to smoke. I am a non smoker however
there needs to be some give and take.
There should be places at clubs/bars for smokers. They should not be locked away in some room or made to stay home. That has gone beyond. Once all the smokers are gone, who's next? I do not want to go into a mall and smell smoke or have it being blown at me BUT I think there should be a place set up for the smokers
so they can go in a ventilated area and smoke their little hearts out. There is no reason why there shouldn't be rooms like this or at least areas for the smokers. To ban smoking altogether is
banning someone elses rights.

Yes, we have the right to live in a smoke free environment BUT the person standing beside you should have the right to smoke in the proper areas.

I am a smoker- but I am trying to quit. I agree with having a ban in all public areas. Also consider this--- People think that smokers cost tax payers money( eg. medically speaking) but in fact it is the other way around we pay so much tax on a pack <75 cents that the gov actually gains. plus smokers also die sooner thus decreasing the long term care cost for the elderly that would incure with non smokers. Tobaco companies also sponser many events-

You say that smokers do not actually cost tax payers more money in areas such as health care, and one of the reasons that you listed was that they die sooner, therefore no long term health care is needed. Well, I would have to disagree. While they might die younger, smokers also tend to require more health care at a younger age. And the chronic health problems that are associated with smoking affect not only the smoker but those around them (i.e. their kids), and then they require health care.

My opinion: wheather smokers die younger than others is irrelevant, those they leave behind still require health care because of what the smoker exposed them to.

There is no need for people to be rude, expressing your opinion is fine. For all you smokers out there I suggest you do not patronage places that don't care to provide ventilated smoking areas. Put up or shut up. As a smoker, I do not visit or buy from places that don't provide a space for my personal choice to smoke, ie: Tim Hortons, Swiss Chalet. I have no desire to smoke in malls or hospitals, so this is not a problem for me. There're are bars out there that still let you smoke, you just have to look. Also, when the total ban on smoking is law, alot off bars will become private clubs. For a 2.00 membership fee per year, you will be able to smoke anytime/any area. So don't despair smokers, in the end we will prevail.

You can smoke anytime near me as long as you can prevent your smoke sticking to my clothes, and getting up my nose and into my lungs. I choose not to smoke. You can exercise your right if it doesn't override mine.

Another thing......
Doesn't it just illustrate the selfishness of an addict when they can demand their right, and what is this right? To poison and kill themselves and anyone near, who merely wants to breathe fresh air.
I worked as a nurse and noticed something else.
With all the little ten-minute smoke breaks during a normal shift, many of these selfish and inconsiderate people manage to get off work for an extra hour a day. Not only that, but they leave the work to someone else to do. Nursing work is hard enough without having to carry someone else's share.

As a non-smoker I didn't jump on the ban wagon "death to the smokers", some of my friends smoke and considerate enough not to smoke around me. You can spend part of your life complaining about something that's never going to change. Businesses are feeling the pinch because of the tough by-laws. They are applying for private club licencing to get aroud it. Smoking is a part of our society, we just have to accept it.

Paddy, you should complain to your supervisor about smokers taking extra breaks. Do you dislike your job so much that what others are doing bothers you that much. I don't smoke, people at my work do, they take 4-5 breaks a day, why should I care. If I feel like going out there and joining them just to talk I can, but I don't use the smoking as a reason to complain about them.

People treat smokers like they are the filth of society, give me a break. There are some many things wrong with society, smoking is the least. Crimes against women and children. When is the last time you wrote you MP about our justice system, our immigration failures, jail terms. I don't smoke myself, and I don't think smoking is a right, it's a bad habit. Remember the fur activist, didn't wear fur, but ran around sporting a lovely part of leather uppers and hanging out at the nearest Keg after a protest.

Well said Carole
and for those of you who think upping the taxes to make people quit, good for the smokers if they can quit, but don't forget the govt will get their taxes from everyone then, not just smokers.

To Maria
Generally I'd agree with you, but (see my answers in brackets to what you said).

Like you said, most people want the smoking ban. So why don't the smokers stay home. It's not like smoking going to kill you and those who are "accidentlly" forced to inhale the second handsmoke. By the way you do know that smoking is the leading cause of all lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes and other nasty diseases like that? don't you?!??

Yes bye all the smokers should be banned to their homes, lets tar and feather them too. Your an idiot. While we are at it lets starve all obese people, prime canadiates for heart attacks, lets ban all drinkers, their prone to liver disease.
