I have spoke with a lot of hosting companies in Newfoundland about the best servers to use. The most common answer was NT. I am a Linux/Unix fan and am wondering about your opinions.

Those people who advocate using NT have never had to worry about getting things done remotely or they are not trying to accomplish much.

Linux/Apache is a killer web hosting platform. It integrates easily with other Un*x staples such as sendmail, cron etc. And then of course there is mod_rewrite.

PHP is perhaps as good an HTML scripting language as you can get and works seemlessly with many databases including MySQL which is quickly gaining popularity.

There really isn't much you can't do on a Un*x web server. Sure you can do a lot with an NT box, but for a site which is hosted remotely my guess is you will hit the wall a lot sooner with NT.

I definately agree. Linux is a far superior platform to NT.

I've had the opportunity to use both. The point and click interface if familiar, so many people (shall I say novices) think that NT is the bomb. In reality Linux is the bomb! You can manage EVERYTHING!!!

There are many things I have wanted to do on the web, Linux I just code and go, NT I have to go out and find the utility that does the job the best. The best example would be cron jobs. NT doesn't have this! You have to use a third party utility, that may or may not work...

I'll agree with the previous comment. Here's my analogy, Linux lets you soar, like and eagle. NT lets you sink like a rock!

Everyone who is really interested in making a network or webhosting community know that a linux server is definatly the way to go. As a reply to the person who said about the point and click interface linux has that too for a local console :) XWindows ;) you can even use a java applet to see your XWindows now. Linux offers stability in a great way, i dont know about some of you guys but i had a linux slackware box up 372 days (allmost a year) then the power went out... i had a redhat box up 92 days and a FreeBSD up 462 days. (personally) Linux offers more web-allowed features to be used. Linux was supposed to be the platform of the internet and everyone knows it is :) The best part is if you leave your cpu connected to the net all night its free ;)
