I noticed that most people want to ban smoking in public places and I don't understand why. If people don't like smoking they can stay home. I think bars need to allow smoking, it is a part of social interaction.

You have to realize, Anglea, that smoking actually makes people sick. I'm not talking about cancer or anything quite as terminal, but a lot of people suffer from things like asthma and allergies, not only to smoke, but to perfumes, hairsprays, etc. Shouldn't they have the right to social interaction too?

The bans (that are happening throughout North America) are helping people to quit. Smoking is a killer and if society creates this midset then we are all better off.Just some thoughts.... Rob

I believe that smoking is very bad for everyone. There are a lot of people addicted to smoking and of course, the government gets rich off the taxes on one hand and gets poor on the other hand trying to provide adequate hospital and medical personnel to cope with the problems they help create. I believe they should jump taxes considerably on cigarettes and people would then try and get help for their addiction.

>I had been a moderate smoker for more than 35 years and couldn't understand why the animosity towards smokers. I tried several times to quit. Once I actually succeeded for almost 5 years. Finally I joined the Seventh Day Adventist (I'm a Jew) non-smokers clinic. They do not talk about God at all. That was in 1983. I have never smoked again. I cannot bear to be in a room with smokers. The sight and smell makes me actually ill. You want to smoke? Good. But not in my presence, please.

Personally, if people want to smoke in a public place, do it in an enclosed well vented room. But to allow smoking at the next table, the logic chokes me.And one thing that really irks me, is when I go to a restaurant, and the best tables, near the windows, are reserved for ...smokers.

Well I agree with the banning. I myself have allergies as do many people. I hate it that wherever I go the air I breathe in is polluted. I don't care who smokes, but smokers have to realize that they are killing others through their choice. I am like so many others nflders who enjoy spending time in the bars. I love the atmosphere. But I can only stay a little while before the smoke becomes unbearable. So many places have recognized a need to ban certain pollutants. I think it's great that we could have smoke banned from most of our places.Particularly our local bars.Mandy

Does anybody know if a ban is being considered? It is becoming common in many other parts of Canada and USA.

Angela, you musn't realize that the ban will not affect people in bars "socializing". The ban is for public places other the bars. The food court for instance, has the ban in affect, so nobody can light up there.I have a question for you, do you smoke?? Because if you do I think you should quit, because if you don't you won't be socializing for much longer.

I believe people have the right to smoke. I am a non smoker however there needs to be some give and take. There should be places at clubs/bars for smokers. They should not be locked away in some room or made to stay home. That has gone beyond. Once all the smokers are gone, who's next? I do not want to go into a mall and smell smoke or have it being blown at me BUT I think there should be a place set up for the smokers so they can go in a ventilated area and smoke their little hearts out. There is no reason why there shouldn't be rooms like this or at least areas for the smokers. To ban smoking altogether is banning someone elses rights.Yes, we have the right to live in a smoke free environment BUT the person standing beside you should have the right to smoke in the proper areas.

I am a smoker- but I am trying to quit. I agree with having a ban in all public areas. Also consider this--- People think that smokers cost tax payers money( eg. medically speaking) but in fact it is the other way around we pay so much tax on a pack <75 cents that the gov actually gains. plus smokers also die sooner thus decreasing the long term care cost for the elderly that would incure with non smokers. Tobaco companies also sponser many events-
