For Immediate Release:

FIREY FIDDLER IGNITES THE STAGE

September 21, Calgary – Award winning P.E.I. fiddler and step dancing sensation, Richard Wood comes to Calgary and Airdrie, October 29 and 30th respectively as part of a Western Canadian tour promoting his latest album Fire Dance.

This 23-year-old talent is an unabashed performer who mixes traditional Maritime fiddling with championship step dancing in a stage show that has gotten him raves. The Scotsman called him a “bow shredding sensation.” His sound combine Irish, Scottish and French influences, but what distinguishes him from his peers, including Ashley McIssac, Natalie McMaster and the Barra McNeils, is that he composes much of his own material.

Wood recently garnered international fame performing with Shania Twain on the David Letterman show and Good Morning America, but has been wowing audiences for over a decade. He started by winning championships for his jigs and reels, not to mention his agility with the strings. Then in 1998, he won Instrumental Artist and Roots/Traditional Artist at the East Coast Music Awards in Halifax. He was featured on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, performed on CBC with Rita MacNeil, at the Wolf Trap Theatre in Washington, DC, and with Jean Butler of River Dance fame. His European tours and his performance for Japan’s Emperor and Prince have all been a huge success.

His 5th album, “Fire Dance”, is sprinkled with his own compositions along with those of other outstanding fiddlers. Wood also plays the keyboards on some tracks and is accompanied by members of the Nova Scotia Symphony on others. The tunes are mostly traditional, but some blend surprising styles including rock, disco and blues.

Wood was the surprise hit of Airdrie’s The Bert Church Theatre a few seasons ago. Anticipating his popularity again, he’s not only returning there on October 30th, 7:30 pm, but he and his sidemen will also perform in Calgary the night before, October 29th at 8:00 pm at the Echkart-Gramate Hall, in the Rosza Centre on the University of Calgary campus. Tickets at both venues are $17.50 for adults and $15.50 for students. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster (telephone number?) or the Campus Ticket Centre (Number?).
