Responsibilities for the control of recreational fishing in Newfoundland and Labrador are divided between the Government of Canada (the federal government) and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador (the provincial government). Federal government responsibilities are administered through the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Provincial matters are dealt with by the Department of Forest Resources andAgrifoods, Inland Fish and Wildlife Division.
Generally speaking, federal authorities and regulations govern the management of the resource and its habitat, i.e., DFO sets season dates and bag limits, determines which rivers shall be scheduled for licenced fishing, regulates fishing methods and equipment, protects rivers from disruption by other activities, and so on.
Provincial Inland Fish and Wildlife Division officials are responsible for such matters as setting guide requirements and the issuance, sale and distribution of angling licences. In addition, the Tourism Division of the provincial Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation undertakes tourist-oriented promotional and informational activities .relating to recreational fishing.
